The aim of Brushstroke Studios is to teach students art through the exploration of many mediums. Periodically, some art history and work of specific artists will be incorporated into lessons and their techniques will be explored. The students are taught different techniques and how to use specific mediums. Although we may explore an artist's style we do not copy their work and students are encouraged to create their own individual works of art based on drawings from their imagination. On this note students will not be allowed to use their phones to copy other people's art works claiming to use their phones as a "reference". Using phones to reference an idea or image will be permitted in short doses. Students will be asked to leave their phone at home or in their bag if its' use becomes problematic. Students will explore such mediums as graphite in various forms, conte, charcoal, pastels - chalk and oil, pen and ink using a nib and permanent ink and/or fine markers, paint - watercolour, tempera, gouache and acrylic, sculpture reliefs with Plasticine, small sized polymer clay sculptures and a variety of printmaking methods. All students are encouraged to be creative and original in creating their art.
Instruction will consist of one hour lessons.Normally classes run from September to June with holidays for Christmas and March Break. Classes consist of groups of eight students. The costs of materials are covered in the cost of classes except for a registration/supply fee of $50 for new students and $25 for current students (who already have certain supplies). The art curriculum is cumulative, building on previous instruction, and flows from one theme to the next. All classes will not necessarily be doing the same medium at the same time. If a group of students is particularity interested in exploring a certain medium we will spend longer at it.There is on going registration throughout the school year. Please understand that these are art lessons and not an art club. Also, art classes run throughout the school year and there are no "six week style courses" available. Young children are expected to be able to concentrate for a full hour. There is no place to go and run off steam here at the studio. Students will be expected to put effort into their work as well as behave in a respectable manner. No bullying of any kind will be tolerated. Once the instruction part of the class is complete, students are encouraged to chat, share, etc. while they work on their art. Often the best of ideas come from sharing in a safe and friendly environment.
